When you think of immune-boosting antioxidants or a diabetes-fighting diet, coffee probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. But, coffee is actually the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet and a proven factor in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
According to a 2005 study at the University of Scranton, in Pennsylvania, the average adult drinking 1-2 cups of coffee a day takes in almost 1300 milligrams of coffee-derived antioxidants daily. Antioxidants are believed to help reduce the risk of heart disease, boost the immune system, fight cancer and, according to the National Cancer Institute, work to protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals, though these results have not been confirmed in humans.
Essentially, antioxidants are beneficial essential chemicals that are abundant in foods like grains, berries, tomatoes and many other fruits and vegetables. There are a wide variety of antioxidants that differ from food source to food source, but the antioxidants found in coffee specifically are called polyphenols. Polyphenols are believed to be instrumental in battling oxidative stress, a factor connected to neurodegenerative diseases and some cardiovascular conditions.
In addition to boosting immunity, coffee has been shown to lower the risk of diabetes. In 2004, a study at the Harvard School of Public Health concluded that regular coffee drinking reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.
Out of 125,000 participants, men who reported drinking more than 6 cups of coffee a day lowered their diabetes risk by almost half, while women showed a risk reduction of close to 30 percent when compared to participants who didn't drink coffee. Though researches still don't know exactly why coffee is beneficial, they expect that caffeine's ability to increase blood sugar and boost energy use may play a part alongside the popular beverage's antioxidant content. Despite the diabetes benefits, drinking that much coffee per day can have other negative health effects, especially for those who should avoid caffeine.
Despite the health benefits, remember that caffeine is a mildly addictive stimulant, one that can increase the heart rate and raise blood pressure. Natural, or not, too much coffee can over stimulate and cause problems. Like most things, coffee should be enjoyed in moderation. But in moderate quantities, coffee can be very good for you, and a great help to your overall health and well being.

Washington BBQ Restaurant
Looking for a restaurant that will knock your socks off? The Porch is a Washington BBQ restaurant that will take care of those sweet and smoky BBQ cravings and will top everything off with some sumptuous desserts. Before we introduce the Porchs menu however, let's talk a little about the history of BBQ.
The History of Washington BBQ
Well, first of all, BBQ did not originate in Washington, as you can probably guess. After all, man has been cooking his meat over an open fire ever since the caveman days. However, the cavemen were not loading on the A-1 or Teriyaki either so where did the BBQ traditions that we are familiar (i.e. backyard, sauce, etc.) with begin?
The Origin of BBQ: Where did it begin and what about Washington BBQ?
The theories are many and varied when it comes to the origin of BBQ. Some of the theories say that barbecue originated in the west, some say that it was in the southern United States, and some even claim that it originated in Europe. My favorite version1 of the origin of BBQ and one of the more believable ones--is the western cowboy version. However, before we dig in to the history (or the legend) we should probably define what real and true BBQ is:
BBQ is the process of slowly cooking meat over wood or coal. The wood or coal cannot be too hot (about 200 degrees is perfect) and gas does not count! Those who use gas grills today will have to face the facts and realize that a gas grill grills, it does not barbeque, although there are those who insist that it is really the sauce that classifies meat as barbecued meat.
Whatever definition you prefer to accept, here is the Western cowboy origin of BBQ:

In the late 1800's there were many cattle drives that took place. Those who drove the cattle were cowboys and those who were in charge of the cowboys were the cattle barons. The cattle barons, like so many businessmen, scrimped when it came to paying (or in this case) feeding their employees. The cattle barons would supply the cowboys with the tough meat portions. These tough meat portions were referred to as brisket and were not exactly appetizing. The cowboys found however that if the meat was left to cook very slowly over wood or coal that in 5-7 hours the meat would make a delicious meal. This however, leaves us with the question of where the tradition of sauce came from.

As mentioned above, many sources indicate that the tradition of barbecued meat marinated in various sauces originated in the southern United States before the civil war. Pigs were abundant at the time and were one of the staples of the south. Traditional BBQ made it possible to use every part of a pig and with sauces make it taste like a delicacy. Barbecue became an important part of religious, social and political functions. Barbecues also seem to be the kind of meal that both the rich and the poor alike can appreciate.

Washington BBQ restaurants have also become a regular part of Washington fine dining and entertainment. Barbeque Maintenance Tips
When purchasing your barbeque grill, think of it as an investment rather then just another item for your outdoor entertainment. You should expect this item to become a large part of your outdoor activities for many years to come. But like any other investments, proper maintenance and care is needed to ensure that your barbeque grill will work for you for many years to come.
While some maintenance and cleaning is specific to the type of barbeque grill your own (gas, electric, charcoal or smoke barbecue grill), the majority of maintenance that should be carried on does not change from grill to grill.
Step 1- Gathering The Necessary Items
You will need some common household items on hand when it comes time to clean your barbeque grill.
Brass wire grill brush
Steel wool pads, preferably that contains soap already.
Mild dish soap
Sponge or dishcloth
Spray cooking oil
Dry baking soda
Aluminum foil
Step 2- Brushing Your Grill Off
The first thing that should always be done to your grill is a routine brushing. Using your brass wire grill brush (or other brush suitable to your type of grill) you should brush off all the surfaces. By routinely brushing your barbeque grill, you will prevent any type of buildup. If buildup from food is left to long, it can become increasingly difficult to remove.
Step 3- Spray Cooking Oil
Once you are sure that your grill is free of all buildup and debris, and that your grill is completely cooled off, you will want to spray it down with a light layer of cooking oil. Spraying it down with cooking oil will prevent your barbeque grill from rusting. It is especially important to make sure your barbeque grill is completely cold, as spraying cooking oil on a hot surface may cause the oil to heat up and ignite, which could be potentially dangerous to you and your barbeque grill.
Step 4- Use Baking Soda and Aluminum Foil on Your Grill
Baking soda is a very nice cleaning and polishing agent. Once you have removed any extra debris and buildup, lightly scrubbing your barbeque grill with baking soda will give it that extra shine, similar to the day that you brought it home from the store. This can also be used on handles and knobs to remove any extra buildup that cannot be taken off with a wire brush.
Aluminum foil can also be used to keep your grill looking nice. Gently rub the aluminum foil on your grill, and you will notice that it removes grim and buildup.
Step 5- Clean Your Racks
The racks in your grill are especially important as this is where the food touches when it is cooking. You will have to use the wire brush to remove as much buildup as possible. Once you remove as much as possible, start washing the racks with dish soap. If the racks are really dirty, you may also want to use the steel wool pads. Be sure to completely rinse off all soap and residue before cooking on these racks again.
Step 6- Preventing Problems
The majority of problems that arise from barbeque grills comes from lack of cleaning and maintenance. That means if you notice something does not seem quite right with your barbeque grill, chances are it can be fixed with just a simple cleaning. Even if you clean it, and still find that it is having problems, at least you saved yourself the potential embarrassment of taking it to a professional only to find out all it needed was to be cleaned.

Covers are available for grills in all shapes and sizes, so chances are, you will find one that fits your grill.
